Riding a bicycle across the city, in almost all areas, is a challenge and a total disregard for one's personal safety. There are a few areas to ride a bike safely, such as Audubon Park in south Garland and the Lake Ray Hubbard natural trails here in District 1. There is a designated bike route on Glenbrook north of Downtown but I seldom see anyone using that route.
Looking ahead, there has been some initial planning by the Transportation Dept to designate a route from south Garland to north Garland. We will be discussing and looking at the bike route issue in the next Development Services Committee meeting, date not yet set. Meanwhile, looking at what other cities are doing and identifying best practices can speed the process locally and help us make good decisions. Anyone able to attend this presentation by the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the City of Dallas should get a quick head start:

I often ride my bike in Richardson because I can begin with the Duck Creek bike and walking path that starts at Beltline Rd. and Jupiter Rd. and go all the way to UTD. This is over 10 miles of bike paths. Except for crossing main traffic arteries such as Campbell Rd. and Plano Rd., cars and bikes do not share the same roads. It is important to keep bike and car traffic isolated.
I would like to see the Richardson bike-way extended south from Beltline and Jupiter along Duck Creek all the way to I-30. I believe this is doable. I've tried following Duck Creek as best as I could through Garland on my bike rides. A Duck Creek Bike-way/walkway would not only provide great recreation but would provide a bike path that connects with major business and residential areas of Garland including the Broadway Centerville area, Downtown, Central Park, Audubon Park and many residential areas. Short spurs could be built to the Duck Creek Bike-way from these areas to ensure easy access. Spurs could also be built to the two Garland DART stations.
Duck Creek cuts through the center of Garland from North to South ensuring a bike-way along it can provide bike access to most of the major areas of Garland. Its connection with the Richardson bike-paths would allow safe bike transportation from South Garland all the way to UTD.
I think a Duck Creek Bike-way through Garland would be a great access to the city for transportation and recreation. I hope this can be part of a North Texas bike-way plan.
