It's not a "done deal" yet but I'm confident it will be.
At last night's work session, the Council agreed to consider naming the new Community Room that will be in the Utility Services Bldg for Goldie Locke. The building is downtown, across the street from city hall, and next to the Fifth Street Crossing multi-use building that is nearing completion.
Goldie founded the Garland chapter of NAACP and led the fight to integrate Garland schools, which resulted in the open-enrollment policy that I think greatly benefits Garland students. Goldie served on the Plan Commission for many years, including during all my eight years there. Some might stop there and think they know her but the shortcoming would be theirs, not Goldie's. Goldie was a Republican and a precinct chair, a business professional, and a Catholic. She fought for fairness for all and she was truly a leader in the purest meaning of the word.
I will be very proud to have even a small hand in memorializing Goldie's contributions to Garland, to her family, and to her neighbors.
A very, very large hand goes to Dorothy Brooks, a District 1 resident and past president of the Carriage House Neighborhood Association, for her extensive efforts to assure that the memory of Goldie would last. It was Dorothy's efforts that sparked the action by so many to honor Goldie.
You can watch the presentation to Council and the moving tribute to Goldie here (Item 3a). Ray Leszycynski posted additional information early this morning at the DMN Garland Blog, as well as the photo that I've used in this post. My last post noting Goldie's passing is here.
The Goldie Locke Community Room will be large but not nearly as large as the love she constantly gave to others.

UPDATE: After moving testimonials from the family, B J Williams, Annie Dickson, and other friends, the Council did vote unanimously to name the new Community Room for Goldie Locke. You can watch that part of the meeting here (Item 4). |
