At the City Council's Tuesday meeting, a number of young Garland residents were appointed to the newest Garland Youth Council. There are a few more appointments pending, which will probably come at the next City Council meeting.
Appointed to represent District 1 were Jaywin Malhi, the current chairman and a Garland High School senior, and Paige Pospisil, a sophomore at Naaman Forest High School. Phillip Graham, also a District 1 resident, the current vice-chair and a Garland High School senior, was reappointed by Council member Barbara Chick.
I have no way of verifying it but I'm very confident that Paige is the youngest person to ever be officially appointed to represent Distict 1.
District 1 is represented by many citizens on various boards and commissions and District 1 residents are quite often drafted to serve by other Council representatives. Most appointments to boards and commissions are for two-year terms, but there are some exceptions.
Appointments to the Garland Youth Council are for one-year terms. At the suggestion of the Youth Council, this year the City Council expanded the membership from nine to eighteen members, two appointments by each City Council representative. The intent was to allow a smoother transition between the outgoing and incoming Youth Councils (an opportunity to have experienced members hold over), to expand participation in the community, and to allow participation by more grade levels. Prior Youth Councils have been almost exclusively high school juniors.
Most City Council appointments are traditionally made in August, a couple months after elections. The Youth Council has been an exception to this rule also, where most appointments are made earlier in the summer to allow the new Youth Council to get organized before school starts.
We are very fortunate to have three such strong leaders as our representatives. If you have opportunity, please express your appreciation to Jaywin, Paige, and Phillip for their willingness to serve and at such a high level within our community!
