If it's golf in District 1, it must have been at Firewheel Golf Park, with 63 holes of golf.
Last Monday, about 425 golfers from across the Metroplex drove through the morning rain to the Jerry Andrews Golf Pavilion off Campbell Rd because they were scheduled to play in the Fifth Annual Guns & Hoses Golf Tournament. It was an act of faith, of dedication, of loyalty. About the time the tournament players were scheduled to tee off, the rain stopped and the skies started to clear. The ping of golf balls smashed at the end of drivers rang across the various courses. It was the largest one-day tournament ever played at Firewheel. The previous record has been consistently held by the Texas Exes (Hook 'Em Horns!).

Fox 4 News was on site to cover the event and to hear the stories of the families.
The Guns and Hoses Foundation of North Texas raises money to assist the families of police and fire fighters that have fallen in the line of duty. Guns & Hoses also sponsors the local Police Boxing Program for at-risk youth. Young men and women in the program accept new levels of responsibility and dedication. Participants leave the program to start college, to enter the armed forces, to serve as peace officers and fire fighters across the state. Locally, Lt David Swavey is a driving force in the program. He has dedicated much of his life working with young people. In the Police Dept, he heads the School Resource Officer program that staffs police officers throughout the Garland schools.
Contributing immensely to the success of this year's tournament were the extensive list of sponsors. I attended the awards dinner and met representatives from numerous Wal-Marts, from Chevrolet and GM, from Aaron's Rents, Coors Light, and many more. I even had a brief reunion with Rick Stacey, the furniture stores owner and previous mayor of Southlake.
The tournament was an outstanding accomplishment and the result of a lot of hard work. All the organizers, sponsors, the team at Firewheel, and the many local volunteers are all to be complimented for a fine, well-run tournament.
Golfers stayed through the awards dinner and distribution of the raffle prizes. I didn't see a single unhappy participant. The winners received handsome trophies and the last-place losers received a special trophy embellished with a roll of toilet paper. Even the losers proclaimed their pride.
Two brand-new Camaros graced the approach to the Pavilion. Unfortunately, neither was a raffle prize. I did have my hopes up though.
