Vote

Garland voters had a chance to go to the polls today to choose between three mayoral candidates. The incumbent, Mayor Ron Jones, will continue as mayor. Four Council races were also on the ballot but as none was contested, the incumbent in each will continue.

So, the current Council will continue unchanged for another year. Four districts next year will have opportunity to see change.

The totals for each race:

Mayor Ronald E Jones
4150
83.17%
  Dino Quintanilla
114
2.28%
  Christopher Ott
726
14.55%
District 3 Preston Edwards
524
100%
District 6 Barbara Chick
261
100%
District 7 Rick Williams
478
100%
District 8 Darren Lathen
590
100%

Numberwise, this year's race was very similar to 2007. About the same number of people early voted (1,984 vs 1,992). Early voters were almost 40% of the final total. About the same number of people in total went to the polls (6,003 vs 6,655). In the mayoral race, quite a few less voted on election day (4,990 vs 6,655) [ed.: late night math error corrected]. One big difference, the 2007 election also had eight charter amendments for consideration.

I'm quite proud of the work this Council and the staff have been doing. Foundations for a better Garland are being built. That work will continue.

Congratulations to those that sought to voice their opinions and ideas through the democratic process.

Congratulations to the winners in today's election. Now it's back to work.

Seems to me that the total number of votes cast for the mayorial election is a truer picture of how many voters went to the polls to cast their vote. If that be the case then there were less than 5,000 votes cast is 2009 May election. Not even 5% of Garland registered voters bothered to vote. And one wonders why Garland doesn't receive more press coverage.
Less than 5% turnout reflects the answer.
