One of the most exciting aspects of living in north Garland is the regularly changing landscape as new businesses locate to our area. Each one brings new services, tastes, and shopping opportunities.
It has been several months since I gave a comprehensive update on all development underway or planned in District 1. There will be a little for everyone. Some will be enthusiastic about the new Houlihan's in the Firewheel Town Center that will offer a spirited atmosphere and food. Teenagers will be frozen in anticipation as they await the opening of Hollister. Our cerebral residents will note the location of the new North Garland Library, but they have years to wait before they actually get to check-out a book.
As many places that are noted in this post, there are others, some that we're still expecting but for which we've grown accustomed to the wait. All the places mentioned here and in earlier posts that are not yet open can be found on the District 1 Interactive Development Map. The link is below. While I post individual development updates as I can and I only do a comprehensive one like this a couple times per year, you can link to the map anytime to see what is new in our area. The link is provided at the bottom of almost every post.
So, by popular demand, coming soon to your area, I present:

Dr Grubbs Veterinary Clinic Dr Donald Grubbs' application to construct and operate a veterinary practice at the Campbell and N Garland Rds intersection was approved by the Council. The new building will be similar in style to the current building where Dr Janet Mason's dental office is located. Dr Grubbs worked closely with the Hills at Firewheel homeowners to assure his business would be a good neighbor and that is much appreciated. |

The Oaks at Firewheel Subdivision This subdivision, for about fifty homes at Campbell and Brand Rds, next to Firewheel Golf Park, has slowly seen its streets poured and screening walls built. New turn lanes and wider shoulders have been installed on Campbell and Brand Rds. Yet there are no new houses. A Grand Homes sales and construction trailer has been moved on-site so new homes should not be too far behind. |

Dr Tommy Reed Dental Offices Extensive ground work has been necessary to prepare the site, at Campbell and Murphy Rds, for several professional office buildings that will feature European architecture and be the new home of Dr Tommy Reed's dental practice. |

North Garland Regional Library A ten-year plan proposed by the library system was approved in 2006 that would consolidate Garland's libraries to three branches, all regional-level facilities. The Council approved the purchase of land for a much larger, new North Garland Branch near the intersection of N Garland Ave and Naaman Forest Blvd. The library would be constructed on the Spring Creek side of the parcel that already has a Comerica Bank on the corner. |

Hyatt Place Hotel New floors are taking shape as construction continues on the Hyatt Place Hotel that will be located between the GISD Special Events Center and SH-190. One of two new hotels in north Garland, the Hyatt Place will have a special relationship with the nearby Special Events Center, each jointly assisting the other to host and house more events. |

Hometowne at Garland A zoning change was approved on Castle Dr, between Country Club and Centerville Rds, for Hometowne, an independent senior living facility with over 230 units on almost 20 acres. The land is owned by the Garland Housing Finance Corporation, which has played an integral part in attracting this development. |

District 1 Interactive Development Map |
After you open the map, you can save to the map link to your computer and access it whenever you want by choosing "Save to My Maps." I change the pin colors and notes on the map as projects progress so it is a quick way to check recent changes in the district.
Also, several road projects are noted on the map because transportation is an integral part of development and quality of life. Recent updates have been added for Bunker Hill Rd and Murphy Rd, both of which border District 1 but are in Sachse.
