Suggestion Box

You've read it on this blog and you've seen the stories in the media: this will be a tight year for city budgets.

The Council reviewed the probable shortfalls and gave suggestions to the staff at the Council Retreat. The administrative staff has been working with the managers of every department to identify savings opportunities. I reported on some of the areas that will probably see cuts.

However, even with the number of heads working to alleviate the challenges, more heads, closer to the heart of the city, can offer rare insight into areas and programs that will save money for all taxpayers.

Garland residents are being asked to contribute their suggestions on how to save money. Names and addresses are required. There are no fancy forms and clever guidance, just an open chance to say what needs to be said.

Those reading this post will probably want to offer their suggestions through the city's website: Citizen Budget Input. There is no limit on the number of suggestions or contributions.

Forms will also be available in the soon-to-arrive City Press (which itself might be the subject of some suggestions). Letters can also be forwarded to City Hall. Directions for mailing will be available in the City Press.

This is participatory democratic government — take advantage of it. It could mean less taxes — literally.
