Dick's Sporting Goods is open and selling sports equipment, clothing, and other gear in the Firewheel Town Center. Still a soft opening at this point, the Grand Opening will be the first week in June 8.

The "big" advertising will start then but a coupon for 10%-off $15 off should be in tomorrow's paper (DMN Sports). I jokingly told my son to put the new soccer ball and skateboard back until tomorrow. I'll probably clip the coupon and use it to get the Gore-Tex hiking boots that I was looking at tonight. Scout activities over the summer should give me several opportunities to break them in.

[Speaking of which, as soon as your son is promoted to the first through fifth grades, they're eligible to join Scouts. If he and you are interested in joining a great Pack based primarily in north Garland, feel free to send me a note: douglas@douglasathas.net.]

I watched one customer practice hitting with a new driver on the electronic golf course. He obviously needed lessons. He kept hooking the ball because he was using a modified baseball grip. I'm glad he was because it demonstrated the finer elements of the system. The three swings I saw were all graphed to show the ball path both from overhead and from the side. The side representation showed the lift and distance he was able to get and the drop at the end.

I was impressed. But not enough to demonstrate how much worse I probably am.

I also took a long, hard look at the kayaks, wondering about the safety of kayaking Rowlett Creek. I used to envy the guys I'd see in kayaks while on whitewater rafting trips, taking a roll to cool-off. In the creek, I'm suspicious the greatest danger isn't rocks or falls or getting caught under a submerged log but the water itself. Wanna know where that water comes from?

Stop by this weekend on your way to see the new Indiana Jones flick next door at AMC. Then check back to see if Dick's has any fedoras.
