On Tuesday, June 19, the Council will consider increasing the Homestead Exemption by 1%. The Council discusses ad valorem tax rates three times per year: (1) the rate necessary to support the Capital Improvement Program, then (2) the Homestead Exemption, and, finally, (3) the Operations and Maintenance Budget. All three components determine the actual property tax bill a property owner in Garland will receive.

Currently, the property tax rate in Garland is 67.86 cents/$100 valuation and projections for the last few years are that it will keep rising.

The following chart is all cities over 25,000 in Dallas, Collin, Rockwall, and Tarrant Counties, plus adjoining cities and one city just for interest. Tax Rates are 2006, or the latest reported. If the Homestead Exemption (HSE) shows "—", there is no exemption. The tax shown is what would be collected for each $100,000 of value, and includes the HSE credit. Tax rates are rounded to four places, although the actual rate may be slightly greater.
