The Garland Police Department's Youth Boxing Program that was recently recognized nationally was praised by Chief Mitch Bates at the Council's Monday Work Session. Today Chief Bates sent a follow-up note about the recent success of the program.

A chart of the 2007 Dallas Golden Gloves Unopposed Champions lists 22 other clubs. In the female category, 7 of 16 positions are held by young women from the Garland program. In the male category, 15 of 42 are from Garland. Garland boxers hold about a third of the positions even though there are 23 clubs.

Chief Bates says, "Lt. Swavey and his coaches are doing an outstanding job with the kids. I really believe they are making an impact in the community."
